Men's Golf Posts Second-Place Finish in Illinois

NORMAL, Ill. – The University of Akron men's golf team posted a tournament-best round of 4-under 280 to close out the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate in second place (875, +23) at the Weibring Golf Club on Sunday.
The round of 280 was the second for the Zips in the last two weeks as Akron posted a round of 4-under 280 during the second round of the Mason Rudolph Intercollegiate on Sept. 24. No. 48 Illinois wrapped up the team title with a score of even-par 852 while Akron finished 10 strokes ahead of third-place Southern Illinois (885 (+33).
Sophomore Charlie Bull continued his hot streak to open the season, posting a round of 3-under 68 to finish tied for third place with a two-day tally of 213 (E) thanks to a final-round 68 (-3). He has now finished in the top-16 in each of the last six events dating back to last spring and has carded five-of-nine rounds at par or better this season.
After a slow start to the season, junior Cameron Simmons posted his first top-five finish of the fall, concluding the weekend in fifth place with a three-round score of 2-over 215. He tied his career-low round of 68 (-3) on Sunday, equaling his 68 during the second round of the UK Bluegrass Invitational on April 9, 2011.
Senior Scott Landreth climbed 20 spots on Sunday to finish inside the top 20 thanks to his round of 1-under 70. He closed out the weekend in a group tied for 17th place at 10-over 223.
Senior Ryan Mason and freshman Harry Whittle each finished inside the top-35, with Mason tied for 31st place (226, +13) and Whittle tied for 34th place (227, +14). Mason posted a round of 3-over 74 while Whittle carded a round of 4-over 75.
The Zips return to action on October 10 when they play host the 17-team Firestone Invitational on the North Course of Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio.
