KALAMAZOO, Mich. -
The University of Akron baseball team swept a doubleheader at
Western Michgian in convincing fashion, 10-2 and 10-3, to win its
first MAC series of the season late last March.
Sophomore picther Andrew
Brown went the distance for the Zips in the opener, scattering
seven hits and striking out four. The right-hander tossed seven
scoreless innings before being touched for a pair of runs in the
eighth. The Broncos put runners on first and second to start the
ninth, but Brown got a double play ball and a fly out to end the
game.
The Zips scored four runs over the first four innings before
breaking the game wide open with a five-run sixth. Drew
Turocy, Brian Kordal and John Turk
led the charge offensively, combining for eight hits and six RBI,
while Kevin Haas collected four
hits on his own.
UA continued to roll in the night cap, jumping out to a 5-1 lead
after the first three frames. Another big inning - this time, a
four-run fourth that was highlighted by a two-run single by Kordal
- proved to be too much for the Broncos.
Junior pitcher Benjamin Danziger threw seven
soild innings, allowing three runs on nine hits, to earn the win on
the mound. Sophomore reliever Scott Foster followed with
two scoreless frames to put the finishing touches on the double
header romp.
Kyle Hallett and Brandon
White each had three hits for the Zips while Turk drove in
three runs.
While the Zips' season ended prematurely, several individuals left
their mark with historic performances in 2010.
Most notably, Haas became the program's all-time hits leader,
finishing with 278 knocks for his four-year career. With a 3.63
cumulative GPA as a marketing management major, the senior
infielder was also named to the CoSIDA/ESPN Academic All-District
Team for the second consecutive year, becoming the first UA
baseball player to do so in back-to-back seasons.
Furthermore, Turocy broke the program's single-season hit record
with a single up the middle in his final at-bat of the season. It
was his 95th hit of the campaign and ended a year that saw him lead
the team in batting average (.358), runs (62), triples (5), RBI
(57) and stolen bases (10).
Following the season, Turk was named to the All-MAC Second Team.
The fourth-year catcher led all MAC backstops with a .350 batting
average and posted a career-high 71 hits. His 26 RBI and .415
on-base percentage were also personal bests.
On Wednesday, GoZips.com will review the UA men's golf season.
