5/11/10 - UPDATE 9:15 AM - The Akron Baseball game against Duquesne has been canceled due to rain.
AKRON, Ohio - The Akron baseball team hits the road for its second-to-last non-conference match up tomorrow (May 11), facing Atlantic-10 foe Duquesne at 3 p.m. at Duquesne Field, weather permitting.
Akron (20-28) has won five of its last out of conference games and defeated Duquesne (12-37) 7-4 in the first meeting on the year on March 24. The Zips and Dukes first met in 1994 however tomorrow's contest will mark the final game between the opponents as Duquesne's baseball program will be disbanded upon conclusion of the 2010 season. The Zips are 23-16 in the all-time series between the two.
Akron won its first non-conference match up last week, defeating
Cleveland State, 8-2 but would lose to then-no. 20 Pittsburgh,
15-12. The Zips had a tough run of things in the final Mid-American
Conference road series at Bowling Green and were unable to avoid
the series sweep despite some landmark performances.
Senior Kevin Haas became Akron's
all-time career hit leader with 268 base knocks and fellow senior
Jake
Plata saw his team-leading and career-long hit streak end at 26
games, just two shy of tying Steve Sada's record 28-game hit
streak. The Zips were led offensively by catcher John Turk
who finished the week with 10 hits, a pair of runs scored and RBI.
Freshman Samuel Trecaso also had
eight hits, three of which were doubles while driving in five runs
and scoring four. Freshman Ivory Alexander recently
slid into the designated hitter role and registered six hits,
including two home runs en route to driving in five RBI and scoring
four runs.
Akron will host Ohio University this weekend, Friday, May 14 through Sunday, May 16.
