Eight Zips Named Indoor Track Academic All-MAC

AKRON - Eight University of Akron student-athletes were named to the 2010 Indoor Track & Field Academic All-Mid-American Conference teams. The Zips tied for the MAC lead with five on the women's side (Larisa Arcip, Carrie Kayes, Katherine Lee, Kim Lorentz and Valerie Wert) and tied for second with three (Joe Mummert, JT Olson and Mike Uhle) on the men's.
To be nominated, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the ward. Outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments for the current season only are considered.
Arcip, a senior with a 3.422 GPA in psychology, earns her eighth Academic All-MAC honor between the cross country, indoor track and outdoor track seasons. For the 2010 indoor season, the Vaslui, Romania product was MAC runner-up in the mile (4:59.84), while placing third in the 800m (2:26.90) at the MAC Indoor Championships. She also ran the 3,000m at the MAC Indoors, placing 22nd. Earlier in the season, Arcip won the mile at the Akron-Kent State Dual Meet (4:58.80) and posted Akron's top time in the mile for 2010, running 4:53.58 to place second at the Penn State National. Arcip additionally had Akron's top time in the 800m for 2010, running 2:12.09 at the Akron Invitational.
Kayes, a senior with a 3.656 GPA in exercise science, earns her third Academic All-MAC honor for the indoor track & field. The Green native earned All-American honors, placing fourth in the pole vault at the NCAA Indoor Championships. While at nationals, she cleared 14-3.25 to break her own UA and MAC all-time record, while establishing the all-time state of Ohio record as well. Kayes was MAC Indoor pole vault champion and two-time MAC Female Field Performer of the Week. She won the pole vault five times in seven indoor meets, clearing at least an NCAA provisional height of 13-1.50 in each win.
Lee, a sophomore with a 3.866 GPA in dietetics, hails from Alexandria, Va., and attended West Potomac High. She posted an NCAA provisional mark in the pole vault, clearing 13-1.50 at the Akron Quad. The height ranked 48th (tied) best in the NCAA and third-best in the MAC for 2010. Also one of Akron's best in the horizontal jumps, Lee placed sixth in the long jump (19-2) at the MAC Indoor Championships. Her season-best efforts (13-1.50 in the pole vault and 19-2 in the long jump) rank fourth-best, respectively, on the UA all-time lists.
Lorentz, a junior with a 3.963 GPA in biology (emphasis on zoology), earns her fourth career Academic All-MAC honor. The Mayfield product scored at the MAC Indoor Championships, placing sixth in the 5,000m (17:33.48). She also placed 18th in the 3,000m (10;26.47) at the MAC Indoors. Lorentz owned Akron's top times in both the 3k and 5k for 2010. Her season-best time in the 3,000m was 9:59.50, which was seventh-best in the MAC for 2010.
Wert, a junior with a 3.808 GPA in art education, earns her fourth career Academic All-MAC honor. A product of Lexington, Wert was second team All-MAC, finishing runner up in the weight throw (61-2.75). She posted an NCAA provisional mark of 64-2.25 in the weight throw, which ranked 21st nationally. During the regular season, Wert won the weight throw three times, including the Akron Opener (64-2.25), Akron Quad (59-7.50) and the Akron-Kent State Dual Meet (61-4.25).
Mummert, a senior with a 3.865 in biomedical engineering, hails from New Freedom, Pa., and attended Susquahannock HS. He earns his third career Academic All-MAC honor after setting the Akron record in the 800m with a time 1:51.66. He placed third in the event at the MAC Indoor Championships (1:54.42) and won the 800m (1:54.53) at the Akron Quad. Mummert additionally ran the lead leg on an Akron Distance Medley Relay team which posted the second-fastest time in school history (10:02.62).
Olson, a redshirt freshman with a 3.265 GPA in computer management and networking, earned second team All-MAC honors, running the lead leg on the runner-up Distance Medley Relay team at the MAC Indoor Championships (10:11.25). The Mt. Orab native posted season-best times of 1:57.59 in the 800m and 4:20.23 in the mile. Olson's time in the mile was 18th-best in the MAC for 2010.
Uhle, a junior with a 3.307 GPA in biology, earns his third Academic All-MAC honor. The Powell native and Olentangy Liberty HS product earned All-American, tying for fourth at the NCAA Indoor Championships (17-6.50). He won his fifth MAC pole vault title in five chances (indoor and outdoor seasons combined) this past indoor season. Uhle cleared 17-9.25 this season, which ranks second on the Akron and MAC all-time lists. He competed in nine meets this indoor season, winning six and clearing at least 17 feet each time out. Two of his three non-wins was finishing behind a non-collegian at the Penn State National and the Virginia Tech Qualifier (with the third being his fourth-place finish at nationals).
