Women's Golf Rallies to Win First Flight
February 23 | Women's Golf
The University of Akron women's golf team continued its dramatic
turnaround in the third and final round of the Edwin Watts/Kiawah
Island Classic by carding 299 strokes to win its flight
Tuesday.
It's third-round score (299) was the lowest of the 2009-10 season
and third-lowest in the two-year history of the program.
Furthermore, UA's three-round score (322-312-299) of 933 strokes
was the second lowest in program history.
In all, the Zips moved up three spots Tuesday to claim 18th place
among the challenging 33-team field.
Sophomore Kristen Hill (76-81-72) led
the charge with a 72 Tuesday to finish with 229 strokes for the
tournament and a share of 41st place individually. Hill's 72 was
nine strokes better than her second-round score and her lowest
single-round score since carding 71 at the Waynesville Country Club
in 2008.
Hanna Ek (87-77-74) also
enjoyed a tremendous turnaround over the course of the event and
finished with 238 strokes to match teammate Tyler Etcheberry
(88-77-73) for 90th place among the 172-player field. Katie
Jenior (79-80-80=239) and Amanda Butler (80-78-88=246)
rounded out the UA lineup card.
The University of Miami (296-307-289=892) edged the University of
Minnesota (303-298-292=893) by one stroke to win the team
title.
With their first spring event in the books, the Zips will next head
to Rio Verde, Ariz., for the Rio Verde
Collegiate Invitational. The three-day tournament will tee off on
Friday, March 5.
