Akron, Ohio - The University of Akron volleyball team fell in four sets (18-25, 25-19, 21-25, 22-25) Saturday night to Central Michigan at James A. Rhodes Arena.
Posting a .190 hitting percentage to the Chippewas' .233, Akron hung close throughout but key UA errors and kills gave CMU the advantage.
Central Michigan came out of the gate strong going up 7-0 in the first set. Akron climbed back to come within four at 16-12 but the Chippewas' would force timely errors to go back up 19-12. An Akron timeout would be to no avail as CMU pushed on for the 25-18 win.
The second set proved much different as the two teams battled it out to open up. Akron would eventually pull away for the 12-7 lead thanks to CMU errors and solid kills. Continuing to push on, Akron went up five at the 22-17 mark. Central Michigan would squeeze in two kills the rest of the way but to no avail as UA came away with the 25-19 victory.
The third and fourth sets followed suit of the first two. CMU would go up 5-0 to start the third but this time Akron hung around tying it at the 11 mark. Back and forth, Akron took the lead at 14-12 thanks to two CMU attack errors. Not giving up easily a UA error and Chippewa kill tied it back up at 14. To follow, Akron posted two kills but two attack errors kept it even at 16. The Chippewas' would take the advantage forcing Zip errors to never let Akron regain the lead for the 25-12 win.
The final set proved much closer all the way. Tied at 13, CMU would force two more UA errors to go up two. Continuing to push on, a service ace and two kills saw the Zips down four (13-17). Refusing to give up, Akron came back within two at 19-17 but again CMU pulled away at 23-19. Forcing two errors, Akron was within two at 21-23 but a Chippewa kill and UA error closed out the match.
On the evening, CMU had 24 attack errors on 146 attempts while UA has 21 on 142 tries.
Three Zips posted double figure kills in freshman Alex Cocklin (14), senior Jackie Goleman (11) and redshirt freshman Ari Mewhorter (10). Sophomore libero Chelsea Harvey registered 16 digs.
