Volleyball Preps for Intersquad Scrimmage

AKRON, Ohio - The University of Akron
volleyball team will host an intersquad scrimmage Saturday, Aug. 22
at 4:00 p.m. in the James A. Rhodes Arena. Open to the public and
free of charge, the event takes place one week prior to the start
of the season opening tournament at Indiana State.
The Zips who went 11-17, 5-11 in the Mid-American Conference return
four seniors this year which include outside hitter Brionna
Patterson and setter Kara Smith. Both outstanding
in their individual categories, Patterson, eighth on the Zips
all-time career kills list with 1,110, finished the 2008 season
fourth in the league posting 3.38 kills per game while Smith,
fourth on the all time assists list with 3,026, finished last year
at fifth in the MAC averaging 10.40 assists per game.
Akron also added six newcomers to the mix for 2009 including five freshmen. Ohio natives defensive specialist Chelsea Harvey (Stow HS/Stow, Ohio) and middle blocker Paiton Twitty (Roy C. Start HS/Toledo, Ohio) will be joined by Wisconsin products, setter Morgan Kuhn (Juneau, Wisc.) and right side middle blocker Alex Wiederholt (Muscoda, Wisc.). Minneapolis, Minn. native Ari Mewhorter, an outside hitter, rounds out the freshmen class.
The Zips will open the 2009 regular season Aug. 28-29 at the Best Western Sycamore Classic.
