Softball Lands Three on All-MAC Teams
May 07 | Softball
AKRON, Ohio - As voted upon by the head coaches, the league office announced Thursday that the University of Akron softball team placed three Zips on All-Mid-American Conference teams. Senior Lisa McLean (Canton, Ohio/Perry) received first team honors, sophomore Heather Bauer (Medina, Ohio/Highland) picked up second team nods and recent MAC Pitcher of the Week, Andrea Arney (Dalton, Ohio/Dalton), made the All-Freshman squad.
McLean easily will go down in Zips history has one of the best
base runners the program has ever had. Grabbing 45-of-48 stolen
bases on the year and averaging .82 SB/G, McLean shattered the Zips
single-season (45) and career stolen base record (111) this season
and has led the league all year in the category. Ranking as high as
third nationally in stolen bases per game, McLean is also dominate
at the plate and is hitting a .344 batting average, which is eighth
in the league. First in the conference in hits with 66 (1.20 H/G),
including seven doubles and six triples, McLean has scored 33 runs
and has driven in 20. Also a force on the field, McLean ended the
regular season with 95 putouts and eight assists to only three
errors.
Bauer quickly made a name for herself in the league this season
after transferring from Wright State after her freshman year. One
of the best utility players in the MAC, Bauer was predominantly on
the mound this year and held the lowest earned run average all
season posting a league-low 1.85 in the circle. Boasting an overall
record of 16-6, Bauer has pitched 16 complete games for the Zips,
including seven shutouts in 151.2 innings of work. Also able to hit
and play outfield, Bauer started 11 games in left field for the
Zips this season. Hitting a .313, Bauer has 15 hits including two
doubles and a triple. Scoring eight runs while driving in six,
Bauer also has nine stolen bases.
Arney, strictly a pitcher for UA, has been solid all season for the Zips going 16-17 overall and 5-7 in league play. Making 38 appearances with 34 starts for the Zips, Arney holds a 2.70 ERA in the circle, which is seventh in the league, and has struck out 161 batters in 209.2 innings. In just her inaugural year of competition for UA, Arney is already third on Akron's single season list in starts, fourth in innings pitched and fifth in appearances and strikeouts.
Picking up the honors for the first time in each of their
careers, all three helped lead the Zips to a record-setting year as
Akron had a overall record of 32-22 in the regular season, the most
wins the softball program has posted since 1998. The Zips league
record of 11-10 marks the most MAC wins in the three-year tenure of
head coach Julie Jones.
Akron will continue its record-setting season Thursday (May 7) when the No. 7 seeded Zips take on the winner of the Ohio/Western Michigan match-up in the MAC tournament. The first pitch is set for 9:15 p.m. at Firestone Stadium in nearby Firestone Park.
