Danziger Receives MAC East Division Pitcher of the Week Honors
May 11 | Baseball
CLEVELAND, Ohio - UA sophomore Benjamin Danziger has earned the prestige of Mid-American Conference East Division Pitcher of the Week as announced earlier by the league's office. The honor is the first of Danziger's career and marks the second time the accolade has been bestowed upon Akron's pitching staff this season. Freshman Alex Loftin also received the award two weeks ago (4/27/09).
Danziger was outstanding in the Zips rubber match victory over No. 26 Kent State on Sunday as he improved his record to 3-4. Danziger went seven innings and a third, allowing just three earned runs on seven scattered hits with a pair of walks while tallying a career-high nine strikeouts on the day. Danziger held the typically hot Kent offense which had been hitting .321 heading into the series finale, to a low .250 batting average. Following his nine-K day against Kent State, Danziger now leads the Zips with 55 strikeouts on the year and has surpassed his tally of 33 Ks from the 2008 campaign.
Akron returns to action in a few days with the regular MAC series finale against the Falcons in Bowling Green, Ohio at Steller Field, beginning Thursday, May 14 with first pitch slated for 3 pm. All three games will be featured on Sports Radio 1350 AM with Bill Morgan's call while live stats will also be provided on www.GoZips.com.
