Women's Golf Wraps Up Play at Canes and Cardinal Classic
April 07 | Women's Golf
The University of Akron women's golf team carded 320 strokes on
the final day of the Canes and Cardinal Classic for a three-round
total of 950 strokes and a 12th-place finish among a talented field
in Coral Gables, Fla. Tuesday.
"Considering that this was the best field we've played against all
season long and we had a chance to beat several teams ranked higher
than us, it was a great learning experience and confidence booster
for our team, " said UA head coach Jenny
King. "The windy conditions continued today and made it really
challenging from tee to green."
Kristen Hill (78-79-79) recorded her
third-straight score in the 70s, finishing with a team-best total
of 233 strokes for the tournament and a tie for 25th place
individually. Hanna Ek (77-77-82) followed with 236 strokes and
a share of 34th place, while Amanda
Butler (79-81-77) matched a season-low round Tuesday for a
two-day total of 237 strokes. Butler placed 38th individually.
"I was especially proud of the consistent play from Amanda, Kristen
and Hanna throughout the tournament," King said.
Tyler Etcheberry (79-83-83) finished with 245
strokes to tie for 56th place while Tammy
Schumacher (81-90-82) rounded out the Zips' lineup card with
253 strokes and a share of 60th.
San Jose State (293-298-296), ranked 25th in the nation, recorded
887 strokes to win the event and were fueled by a pair of top-five
finishers. Erica Moston (71-73-70) captured the individually title
with 214 strokes while teammate Katrin Delen Briones (73-73-75)
grabbed third place with 221 strokes.
Washington State (298-305-307) and Princeton (299-308-303) each
carded 910 strokes for the three-round event and tied for second
place.
The Zips will have little time to regroup as the young club will
next head to Richmond, Ky. for the EKU Lady Colonel Classic this
weekend. The invitational will he held on Saturday and Sunday at
the Arlington Golf Club.
The teams will play 36 holes on the first day and 18 on the second.
Both days will begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. The course is
5,817 yards and par is 72.
