Women's Golf Set To Tee Off at MAC Championships
April 23 | Women's Golf
The University of Akron women's golf team will be in the hunt
for its first Mid-American Conference championship when it tees off
against the other either league members at the Longaberger Golf
Club in Nashport, Ohio this weekend.
The three-day event will begin with 36 holes Friday starting at
7:45 a.m. and continue with single-rounds over the next two days
starting at 8 a.m. Live stats will be available and can be accessed
by clicking here once play has begun.
It has been an impressive inaugural season for Zips, who recorded
eight top 10 finishes in 11 events this year. Moreover, UA finished
in the top five three times, including a pair of runner-up
designations at the Cardinal Classic (Sept. 22-23) and the Zippy
Invitational (Sept. 29-30).
It is important to note that UA, which boasts one of the top
freshman classes in the nation, has been able to enjoy this success
with a roster featuring six freshman and one senior. First-year
standout Kristen Hill captured the program's first
individual title at the Cardinal Classic behind a low round of 70
strokes and was subsequently named MAC Golfer of the Week.
When the Zips hit the links Friday, it will be their first action
since finishing seventh out of 18 teams at the Eastern Kentucky
Spring Invitational on Apr. 12.
For the second time in three years, Longaberger Golf Club will be
the site of the MAC Championships. The nine teams will be tested on
a championship layout that meanders over a setting of rolling hills
with numerous elevation changes.
Celebrating its 10-year anniversary, Longaberger Golf Club was
recently named the top public course in Ohio by both Golf Magazine
and Golfweek. In a survey of America's public golf courses (May
2004), Golf Digest named Longaberger Golf Club one of 16 five-star
courses and listed the club among the top 10 of all courses opened
within the past five years as well as one of the top 10 in
service.
The course also was named America's Best New Upscale Public Course
of 2000 by Golf Digest. Longaberger Golf Club opened in 1999 to
provide guests with a golf experience of the highest quality on a
tournament-caliber public course. The course was designed by
nationally-known architect Arthur Hills. The course features bent
grass tees, greens and fairways with a bluegrass/ryegrass mix in
the rough, five sets of tees for every skill level, a 25-acre
practice facility with target greens, two practice greens and a
short game area.
Longaberger Golf Club is located about 45 miles east of Columbus
off State Route 16, north of the intersection with State Route 146
in eastern Licking County.
