Kent State Takes 5-1 Win Over Akron
April 12 | Softball
KENT, Ohio Unable to piece timely hits together, the University of Akron softball team (23-15, 6-5 MAC) fell 5-1 Sunday afternoon to the Kent State Golden Flashes.
Akron scattered five hits throughout the day and left seven base
runners on but were unable to produce enough to grab the win.
Akron's only run came in the fourth starting when senior Julie
Boyes (Uniontown, Ohio/Lake) was walked. A RBI single to center
field from junior Krista Hansen (Arlington, Wash./Arlington) would
drive pinch runner, senior Jaci
Brindus (Canton, Ohio/GlenOak) home to put Akron on the board
(1-4).
The Zips attempted to add another in the fifth inning after
sophomore Sarah Earley (Venetia, Penn./Peters Township) and
senior Lisa McLean (Canton, Ohio/Perry) reached base on
two singles. With Boyes at the plate she battled to a 3-2 count,
fouling off numerous pitches but it was to no avail as a foul out
to the third baseman kept KSU up 4-1.
Four of Kent State's runs came in the third inning when they
posted four runs off of four hits, including two home runs. The
Golden Flashes added one more in the sixth inning after the lead
off batter was walked. Two Akron errors allowed the runner to
score.
Freshman Andrea Arney (Dalton, Ohio/Dalton) took the loss
for UA (12-10) allowing four earned runs on four hits. Sophomore Heather
Bauer (11-5) came in as relief in the third and kept KSU hit
less striking out one and walking one.
The Zips will return to the field on Tuesday when they travel to
Coriopolis, Pa. for a non-league doubleheader against Robert
Morris. The first pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
