Rifle?s Compton NCAA Bound
February 25 | Rifle
UA rifle freshman standout Jenna
Compton has been selected to compete in the NCAA Rifle
Championships set for March 13-14 at Texas Christian University in
Forth Worth, Texas. Compton earned a gold medal finishing first in
the air rifle division at the NCAA Qualifier held at Ohio State
less than two weeks ago to earn the invite with a score of 587,
which ranked among the top 15 collegiate air rifle shooters in the
nation.
Compton will have two weeks to prepare for the trip to Texas and
will be the first shooter representing Akron at the NCAA
Championships since 1979, when Mark Beres, achieved the feat for
the first time. Head Coach Newt
Engle notes, "This could not be happening to a more deserving
athlete. Jenna works very hard for each and every point and is
completely dedicated to the success of the team."
As an aside to Compton's accomplishment, rifle alum Mark Beres is
merely days away from being inducted into the 2009 class of the
Varsity A Sports Hall of Fame. Beres, who last represented the
Rifle squad at the NCAA's, notched respective 10th and 17th place
finishes in the air rifle and rifle divisions. Coach Engle remarks,
"Mark is a valued member of our alumni and I am pleased to see him
represent Akron Rifle in the Hall of fame. Mark still stops by the
range, talks to our athletes and even offers valuable tips to help
them succeed."
The ceremony is set to take place at the Martin Center on Feb. 28.
A complete recap and list of inductees in addition to information
about the event can be found at Varsity
A Hall of Fame.
On Saturday, Feb. 28, Compton and the rest of the UA rifle team
will defend their Western Intercollegiate Rifle Conference (WIRC)
championship in West Lafayette, Ind. on the campus of Purdue
University. The event will start at 8:30 am.
