February 12 | Softball
AKRON, Ohio - After opening the season 2-2 at the Hornet Invitational, The University of Akron softball team will return to the field Friday as part of a five-game series hosted by the College of Charleston in Charleston, S.C.
In the opening weekend, the Zips started breaking records early as they set the single season school record in stolen bases nabbing 12 in the second contest against tournament host Alabama State as part of a two-game sweep. The previous record of 10 was set back in 1992.
Individually, Akron also saw dominant performances from their seniors, particularly Lisa McLean and Amber Lowe, and strong pitching on the mound from freshman Andrea Arney and sophomore Heather Bauer.
Lowe and McLean combined for 11 stolen bases, nine hits and four
RBI with McLean's weekend performance earning her Mid-American
Conference East Division Player of the Week honors for the first
time in her career. In the circle, Arney and Bauer each picked up
their first win as an Akron Zip with Bauer throwing seven shut out
innings in her first outing.
On Friday, at the College of Charleston Cougar Classic, the Zips will play tournament host (4:00 p.m.) and Syracuse (8:00 p.m.) followed by two Saturday games against East Tennessee State (12:00 p.m.) and James Madison (4:00 p.m.) and will wrap up the tournament Sunday with a contest against Howard (12:00 p.m).
During the 2008 campaign the Zips fell to CofC (0-8), ETC (0-1)
and JMU (2-5) and picked up a 2-1 win against Howard. This is the
first ever match-up against Big East member school Syracuse.
