Women?s Soccer Tops EKU 2-1, Remains Undefeated

AKRON, Ohio
– The University of Akron women's soccer team remained
undefeated with a 2-1 win over Eastern Kentucky on Friday at Lee
Jackson Field.
An own goal by EKU (2-2-1) in the 73rd minute provided the final
margin for Akron (4-0-0) in a match that was very even. Both teams
took 12 shots and the Zips were credited with eight shots on goal
while the Colonels took seven.
"I knew this was going to be the kind of game that you have to
grind out," Akron head coach Chris
Pfau said. "There were a lot of things to take into
consideration; the weather, having been off for a while and the
fact the EKU is a very good team. With that said, we fought through
all of that and got the win and our confidence continues to
build."
UA's first game in a nine-day period was played through
intermittent rain showers and on a soggy field, but that didn't
slow down its up-tempo offense, which took nine shots in the first
period. Junior and leading scorer Britni
Back got the Zips on the board in the 43rd minute, being true
on her shot from the top of the box into the right portion of the
net. The sequence started when sophomore Liz
Haney fed the ball to sophomore Jordan
Baranowski who found Back. Both were credited with an assist,
the second of the year for Baranowski and the first for Haney.
"We are very happy with this win," Baranowski said. "We knew this
was not going to be easy. We did a lot of things over the long time
off to keep up our fitness level and focus, and that paid off
tonight. We get to play again on Sunday and that should help us get
into a good rhythm with the conference season starting soon."
EKU's Kayla Swearingen evened the contest at 1-all in the 48th
minute. Her cross from the right side bounced high off the left
post and past UA freshman goalkeeper Jenn
Wolbert. Wolbert had a season-high six saves and earned her
fourth win of the year.
Akron travels to Youngstown State on Sunday for a 1 p.m. EDT match,
which begins a stretch of five-straight road games for the
Zips.
