Akron, Ohio-A rain delay couldn't stop The
University of Akron softball team from sweeping the Toledo Rockets
Friday afternoon as the Zips shut them out 1-0 in the first and won
a 10-9 nail biter in the second contest.
In the first game, senior Christina
Swierz started her 39th game for UA pitching her fourth shutout
of the season. The only run of the game would come when junior Julie
Boyes hit her sixth home run of the year in the fourth inning
giving the Zips the win.
In game number two, Swierz set the school record for most
appearances in a season with her 48th game on the mound as an Akron
Zip.
The Rockets wouldn't go down easy in the second game as they
loaded the bases in the first inning, however, were only able to
produce one run.
The Zips would put three on the board in the bottom of the
second inning starting when junior Cali
Stratton hit a single. Freshman Alex
Feltes would reach on an error by the second baseman and both
had a double steal putting them at second and third when sophomore
Krista Hansen was at the plate. They would score
when Hansen reached base on an error by first baseman. Freshman Sarah
Stromack advanced Hansen to second when she laid down a
sacrifice bunt and Hansen advanced to third stealing her 16th base
of the year. Hansen scored the Zips third run when senior Jennifer
Stottlemyer singled to left field.
would enter the record books in the fourth inning when she hit
the first grand slam of her career. The action started when
Stromack and McLean both reached safely on bunts and pinch hitter
sophomore Jessica Davidson loaded the bases when she
singled down the left field side bringing Boyes to the plate to hit
the Zips first grand slam since the 2003 season.
The Zips increased their lead in the fifth inning when Feltes
led off with a double quickly stealing third, however, she was out
on a fielder's choice that put pinch hitter freshman Olivia
Hegedus at first. Stottlemyer would single bringing McLean to
the plate where she hit a double driving Hegedus home for the Zips
eighth run and freshman Sarah Earley stepped up hitting a single to
drive in the Zips last two runs of the day.
The Rockets slowly adding runs throughout the game scoring one in
the first, third, fourth and fifth innings. They didn't give up as
they scored five runs in the seventh inning but it wasn't enough as

Shorter picked up her first save.
