Akron Baseball Inks Five For 2009-10 Season
December 02 | Baseball
- Head coach Pat Bangtson and the Akron Zips baseball team
are pleased to announce the signing of five high school standouts
for the 2009-10 season. Bryan White (Wheelersburg HS), Jared Turocy
(Canfield HS), James Sheltrown (Springboro HS), Sam Trecaso (St.
Vincent-St. Mary HS) and Tyler Begun (Mayfield HS) will all join
the UA baseball program next year.
With the signing of Bryan White, a first
basemen/outfielder, the Zips welcome the younger brother of
sophomore outfielder, Brandon White. White, who also plays football
at Wheelersburg, brings a great deal of success from the high
school level as he and the Wheelersburg baseball team were most
recently state runner ups in 2008.
Coach Bangtson remarked that White, "is a standout hitter with the
potential to become an exceptional middle of the lineup hitter for
the Zips."
Akron baseball adds another family name to the roster as
Jared Turocy follows in the footsteps of older
brothers Frank and Drew to play for the Zips in 2009-10. The
youngest of the Turocy brothers will serve primarily as a
left-handed pitcher and outfielder next year. Turocy, a tri-athlete
at Canfield High School also plays soccer and basketball when
absent from the diamond.
Bangtson notes that, "Jared is an exceptional athlete with good
speed who will assist us as both a position player and
pitcher."
James Sheltrown also signed a NLI to play baseball
for the University of Akron next year. With the ability to play
middle infield and catcher, Sheltrown adds versatility and depth to
the Zips lineup.
"James is a hard-nosed player with a lot of enthusiasm for the
sport of baseball. I expect him to energize both our offensive and
defensive lineups," notes Bangtson.
Local standout Samuel Trecaso of St. Vincent-St.
Mary's High School also signed on to play making the short trip
across town to join the Zips in 2009-10. Trecaso, a power-hitting
infielder, with the capacity to play either second or third base is
expected to make an immediate impact on the Zips lineup.
Coach Bangston is excited about the addition of Trecaso stating
that "he' an outstanding hitter who possesses a swing which should
adapt well to the Division I collegiate level. He has a great work
ethic and is an extremely dedicated athlete who'll come in and work
hard for our program. It's great to get a local player who'll help
build the future of the Zips program."
Finally, Tyler Begun rounds out the 2009-2010
recruiting class for the Zips baseball team. Begun, a player with
the ability to play all three infield positions (short, second or
third) will surely make an impact for the Zips upon his arrival.
Begun also had an outstanding football career at Mayfield High
School.
"Tyler is an outstanding athlete with a tremendous level of
athleticism which should help him find a way into our lineup fairly
early in his career," adds coach Bangtson.
Overall, Coach Bangtson remarked that, "my staff and I were really
focused on upgrading our offensive and defensive positions. As
noted, all of these players have the ability to play secondary
positions, which provides much needed flexibility within our roster
for 2009-2010. Secondly, it gives these young men better
opportunities of fielding playing time early in their careers. We
are extremely pleased with our recruiting class and strongly
believe that these men will help us strive to attain our goal of
competing for a conference championship."
