Gold Mounts Comeback For Win; Leads Series
October 07 | Baseball
The Gold squad capitalized in the fifth inning posting six runs
en route to their 8-6 victory at Lee Jackson Field this afternoon.
Junior Steven Zemanek II pitched five innings allowing
seven hits, four earned runs and two walks to secure the victory
for the Gold squad while Todd Fleming was credited with the loss.
With the win, Gold extends its lead in the best of five series to
two games. Brian Kordal led the Gold offense with three hits
in four appearances, a run scored and two RBI.
The Blue Squad jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top half of
the first after Junior Kevin Haas drew a walk before advancing to
third on a Lawrence Penn single. After Penn swiped second,
Kyle Hallett hit a sharp single through the
infield to plate both runners (Haas' run was unearned). Steve
Zemanek walked Ryan Frazee before surrendering a RBI single to
Dan Burant.
The Gold squad bounced back in the bottom half of the inning with a
run when Brian Kordal smashed a two-out triple down the
right side to score catcher John Turk
who drew a walk from sophomore hurler Todd
Fleming.
After a scoreless third inning, both teams posted a run apiece in
the fourth. Senior Ryan Frazee drove a pitch over the left field
wall for the first round-tripper in the series to improve the score
to 4-1. Frazee was 1-4 with a homerun, run scored and RBI.
In the bottom portion of the fourth, Phil
Bednar led off with a double down the left field line before
scoring on a Jason Corzine single to left, cutting the Gold
deficit to two runs (4-2).
The Blue squad added a run to their lead in the fifth as Kevin
Haas scored on a fielder's choice though it wouldn't last much
longer. Costly errors and an eruption in the Gold offense resulted
in six runs as Gold took the lead 8-5. The Gold side bat through
the order as Bednar, Nick Solitario and Ivory
Alexander combined for four RBI. Jake
Plata went 3-4 with a run scored while Bednar rounded up the
top performers for the Gold team with two hits in four appearances
with two runs scored and two RBI.
The Blue Squad managed one last run in the top of the seventh
inning to account for the final score 8-6.
