UA Rifle First at Boilermaker Invitational

The 13th ranked Akron rifle team out-shot seven different teams
to claim their first victory of the season at the Boilermaker
Invitational hosted by Purdue University yesterday. Akron edged the
Ohio State University by a mere 12 points shooting a 4536 to OSU's
4524.
In the smallbore division, Ohio State claimed the top two spots
taking an early lead with 2264 points to Akron's 2243. Gina
Cheliras, claimed the top gun award in the smallbore division with
her score of 580. Jed Neidigh (OSU) trailed her in second (572)
while Akron freshman Joel Nuzum (568) shot into the third slot
for the ZIps.
Coach Newt Engle was pleased with the team's
performance and direction noting, "It is the improvement in our
smallbore scores which allowed us to pull ahead as the overall
winner at this match."
The Zips would use the air rifle division to secure the victory,
posting a score of 2293 to OSU's 2260. Freshman Ryan
Stein shot a career best personal score of 583 to clinch first
place. He was trailed by fellow Zip, senior Megan
Reinking who fired a steady 580 and won a tie-breaker against
OSU's Neidigh to claim the second spot. (Neidigh would finish 3rd
after losing the tie-breaker to Reinking.) Sophomore Brittany
Jones shot a career high score of 576 en route to a fourth
place finish in the air rifle division.
On November 1st the Zips return to action traveling to Columbus,
Ohio where they will face the Buckeyes for the second time this
season. The match is scheduled for 1 p.m. in the OSU Armory.
