Akron Falls 5-1 at Northern Illinois in Series Finale

DeKALB, Ill. Northern Illinois took a 2-0 lead in the
third inning and held on for a 5-1 victory over Akron on Sunday
afternoon at Mary M. Bell Field in DeKalb, Ill.
With one weekend of conference play remaining, Akron is now 7-7 in
Mid-American Conference action, 16-21 overall.
The Huskies took advantage of two hits and an Akron error to put
two runs across the plate in the third inning. Krystn Sendejas led
off with a double to left center and came home one batter later on
an error. A wild pitch and another NIU hit moved Krista McPherson
to third before she came home on a sacrifice fly from Randi
Kreiter.
Northern Illinois added two more runs in the fourth and a single
score in the fifth before Akron put one on the scoreboard in the
top of the sixth inning. Pinch hitter Jessica
Davidson (Akron, Ohio/Ellet) was hit by a pitch and made her
way to third thanks to sacrifice hits from Lisa
McLean (Canton, Ohio/Perry) and Carrese
Moody (Galloway, Ohio/Hilliard Darby). Cali
Stratton (Liberty, Mo./Liberty) picked up an RBI with a single
to center field.
Stratton led the Zips at the plate, going 2-for-3. Akron managed
just four hits in the contest with Jaclyn
Spirtos (Medina, Ohio/Highland) and pinch hitter Amanda
Cody (Tampa, Fla./Chamberlain/Wright State) also reaching
base.
Lindsay Bodeker (Cincinnati, Ohio/Lakota West)
got the start and went four innings, allowing two runs on five
hits. Julie Boyes (Uniontown, Ohio/Lake) pitched the
final two innings with three runs on a pair of hits.
Akron will play its final nonconference game of the season on
Wednesday as it plays host to Ohio State at 5 p.m. at Lee Jackson
Field.
Notes: The softball team will host its "Inaugural
Strike-Out Cancer" event on May 2 against Ohio State. First pitch
is set for 5:00 p.m. ... In 2003, the American Cancer Society and
the National Fastpitch Coaches Association teamed up to form the
"Strike Out Cancer" program, which is a program that helps create
awareness, provide education and raise funds for the fight against
