Zips Top Miami & Kent In Tri-Match
April 23 | Men's Golf
Colin Clemente claimed the first medalist award
of his career to help guide the University of Akron men's golf team
a 21-stroke victory over Miami (Ohio) and Kent State in a tri-match
on Sunday.
Clemente (Hubbard, Ohio/Warren JFK HS) continued his strong spring
with an opening-round 69 at Windmill Lakes Golf Club, before
posting an even par-72 at Firestone Country Club to take top honors
with 141 strokes.
Scoring for the three-team event was different from a traditional
tournament as the best five out of seven marks were counted towards
the team total. The RedHawks finished in second with 733 total
tallies, while the Golden Flashes finished with a mark of 742.
"This was a really big win for us," head coach Tom
Porten said. "I am especially pleased how we were able to beat
a high-caliber program like Kent State by eight strokes on their
own course and were able to validate that back at Firestone with a
20-stroke margin."
Ryan Gutowski (Copley, Ohio/Copley HS) put
together one of his best days of the spring season carding
in 143 strokes (73-70). Sophomore Brad
Wright (Cambridge, Ohio/Cambridge HS) finished one shot back
with a 144 (69-75) swings.
Blake Sattler (New Philadelphia, Ohio/New
Philadelphia HS) recorded a mark of 145 with rounds of 71 and
74.
Ryan Culbertson (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster HS) and Matt
Considine (Akron, Ohio/Archbishop Hoban HS) each finished with
146 strokes. Culbertson, one of two seniors on the squad, carded in
a 69 at Windmill Lakes and followed with 77 strokes at Firestone.
Considine took a more consistent path to his total as he posted
back-to-back rounds of 73.
Sophomore Vaughn Snyder (Massillon, Ohio/Canton Central
Catholic) completed the Zips' scorecard with a mark of 148
(76-72).
Akron will now prepare to play host to the FirstEnergy
Intercollegiate starting on Saturday morning on the North Course at
Firestone Country Club. 16 other teams will join the Zips for the
two-day 54-hole event.
