Akron Rallies For 6-2 Win Over Ohio
April 21 | Softball
AKRON, Ohio After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning,
Akron (13-19, 4-5 MAC) came back with runs in the first and third
innings before taking control with a four-run fifth inning en route
to a 6-2 win over Ohio (18-23, 7-6 MAC) on Saturday afternoon at
Lee Jackson Field.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow in a single game at 1
p.m.
Starter Lindsay Bodeker (Cincinnati, Ohio/Lakota West)
had a rough first inning, allowing two runs on four hits, before
settling down as she improved to 9-12 on the season. Bodeker
allowed just three hits over the final six innings, finishing with
six strikeouts in her 11th complete game of the season.
Trailing 2-0, Akron got a run back in the bottom of the first when
the Ohio left fielder lost the ball in the air and leadoff batter
Lisa McLean (Canton, Ohio/Perry) legged out a
triple. A double steal saw McLean cross home plate to bring Akron
back to within one.
The Zips tied the game in the third inning as McLean again got the
rally started with a single through the pitcher's legs. A perfectly
placed bunt put Carrese Moody (Galloway, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) on
first, and after Cali Stratton (Liberty, Mo./Liberty) moved them
over with a sacrifice bunt, a walk to Julie
Boyes (Uniontown, Ohio/Lake) loaded the bases. Jaclyn
Spirtos (Medina, Ohio/Highland) stepped up to the plate with
two outs and drove in Moody with a walk.
After a fourth inning which saw Bodeker pitch out of a
bases-loaded jam by striking out Shalene Petrich looking, the Zips
came back with a four-run outburst that sealed the victory. Katrina
Moffett (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea) drove in the first run with a
double down the right field line, scoring Moody. After a single
from Spirtos and a walk to Paige
Smith (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) loaded the bases, freshman Krista
Hansen (Arlington, Wash./Arlington) looped a double into right
field to score all three runs.
Moody was 3-for-3 at the plate with a run scored, while Spirtos
went 2-for-2 with one run and one RBI. The Zips finished with 10
hits to the Bobcats' seven, but were also plagued by three
errors.
