Volleyball Hires Assistant Coach
March 05 | Women's Volleyball
Former University of Akron volleyball player Monica
Froelich has been hired as an assistant coach for the
program, Zips head coach Mike Sweitzer announced
Monday.
"I'm very familiar with Monica after having coached her and know
that she's an outstanding individual with great loyalty and
volleyball intelligence," Sweitzer said. "She will work with our
middle blockers and, as the school's career leader in blocks, will
be a great teacher and role model for that group."
Froelich, formerly Monica Morlock, played with the Zips from
2000-2003 and is UA's all-time block assists leader (405). As a
junior on UA's 2002 Mid-American Conference East Division
championship team, she paced the club with 154 total blocks and
tied for third in the league with a blocks-per-game average of
1.23.
The former right-side hitter is also ranked second on the school's
all-time total blocks list with 477 and seventh with 65 career solo
rejections.
"I am very excited and honored to be back with the Zips and I can't
wait to start working with the team," Froelich said. "I hope to
bring new energy and to instill the same great competitive mind set
that I gained here as a student-athlete. I am looking forward to
being a part of the volleyball coaching staff and using my skills
to help improve the overall success of the team."
Froelich joins fifth-year assistant coach and former UA player Jenn
Snyder on Sweitzer's staff. Sweitzer, who owns a 271-232 (.539)
career mark, will begin his 17th season at the helm next fall.
