Akron Picks Up 5-3 Win at Toledo

TOLEDO, Ohio - - A three-run first inning kick-started the Zips' offensive attack in a 5-3 Mid-American Conference victory at Toledo Saturday afternoon. With the win, Akron improves to 14-15, 5-2 MAC.
Carrese Moody (Galloway, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) got things started with an RBI single in the first inning, scoring Sara Zilles (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) who had reached on a walk. Cali Stratton (Liberty, Mo./Liberty), who reached on a single, and Julie Boyes (Uniontown, Ohio/Lake), who took first on a fielder's choice, both scored on an error by the left fielder off Lisa McLean's (Canton, Ohio/Perry) bat. The Zips managed their three-run outburst on just two hits.
Toledo (11-22, 2-4 MAC) came back with a run in the third on an RBI single from Denise VanVossen, but Akron put the game out of reach with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth, Zilles came up with a two-out single and took second on her second stolen base of the afternoon. Playing with a hot bat, Moody doubled to score Zilles for a 4-1 Akron lead.
The insurance run in the fifth came on a RBI single from pitcher
Megan MacKenzie (Delta, British Columbia/North Delta). Stratton
plated the run after leading off with a base on balls.

MacKenzie struck out 10 and walked just two, allowing eight hits and two earned runs to improve to 8-10 on the season and 3-1 in MAC play.
Toledo attempted a comeback in the bottom of the seventh inning with a pair of runs on three hits, but MacKenzie struck out Erica Singer to end the game.
Moody, Stratton and Zilles combined for six of the Zips' eight hits, and Akron was a perfect 4-for-4 in stolen base attempts on the afternoon.
Akron wraps up its two-game series at Toledo with a single game tomorrow at 1 p.m.
