DEKALB, Ill. - After moving the series finale up an hour to avoid possible rainstorms, The University of Akron (6-15, 2-3) and Northern Illinois (10-14, 3-2) had to wait an hour to start Sunday's Mid-American Conference game, which lasted only seven innings before being called due to rain. The Zips seemed to be effected by the delay giving up seven runs on five hits and two costly errors in the first inning.
Following a quick 1-2-3 inning in the top of the first, NIU plated seven runs on only five hits, while the Zips defense committed two errors and had two other plays in which defensive mistakes were made without errors being charged. Only three of the runs were earned against Stephen Williams Jr. (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) in the inning.
Akron plated one run in the fifth as junior Rashard Graves (Indianapolis, Ind./Lincoln Trail JC) doubled to put runners at second and third with no one out. However, the Zips could only manage one, coming on an RBI ground out by junior Chase Liggett (Malvern, Ohio/Florida CC).
The Zips added two more runs in the sixth inning on three hits, including an RBI-double by Marcus Geiselman (Canton, Ohio/Canton McKinley).
Williams (1-5) went just three innings, giving up seven runs
(three earned) on six hits. In the fourth he gave way to freshman
Frank Turocy (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield), who pitched well in relief
going four innings allowing just one run on three hits.
