MURRAY, Ky. - The University of Akron baseball team (5-8) completed its five-game, four-day road trip with an 11-3 loss at Murray State (5-9) on Monday afternoon. The Zips have now lost seven in a row. Behind three big innings for the Thoroughbreds, Akron just did not have enough pitching to get through the weekend successfully.
Coming into the fifth game in four days, the Zips had dropped all four weekend games after taking leads late into the game, but had little bullpen help to close out the wins due to the amount of innings played over the road trip. However, in the series finale against Murray State, the Thoroughbreds scored four runs in the second, four more in the fourth and three in the eighth to complete the sweep.
The Zips for the fourth time in five games took an early lead, scoring a run in the top of the first. Sophomore Scott Gunn (Toledo, Ohio/St. Francis de Sales) tripled with two outs and sophomore Kurt Davidson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) followed with an RBI-single up the middle.
Akron held the lead into the bottom of the second when Murray State plated four runs on five hits and one error by the Zips. In the fourth, the Thoroughbreds plated four more runs, again on five hits and a Akron error to push the lead out to 8-1.
UA chipped away at Murray State's advantage in the top of the
eighth with two runs on three hits. Freshman Ryan Frazee (Gahanna,
Ohio/Westerville) and Gunn hit back-to-back doubles to score the
first run. Davidson then singled to advance Gunn to third, who
later scored on sophomore Vince Chiera's (Akron, Ohio/Walsh)
sacrifice fly to to right field.
