Rifle Keeps Perfect Season Alive
December 11 | Rifle
Seniors
Angie Engle (Mogadore,
Ohio/Firestone) and
Laura Kuntz (Columbiana,
Ohio/South Range) posted season high scores as the University of
Akron rifle team finished the first half of the season with a
perfect 6-0 record after topping Rose Hulman Institute of
Technology this past weekend.
For the fifth time in six competitions, the two Zips teams
outscored the competition as the Gold team led the way with 4,536
points, followed by the Blue team's 4,477. Rose Hulman finished
with a total of 4,305 points.
Engle (573) and Kuntz (571) paced a smallbore squad that tallied a
season-high team score of 2,276 points. Also performing well were
junior
Megan Reinking (Fort Wayne,
Ind./Concordia Lutheran) and sophomore
Julie DeBrita (Scotia,
N.Y./Scotia Glenville), who recorded scores of 567 and 565,
respectively. In all, Akron captured the top nine individual slots
with Engle taking top honors.
"We have been a little off the mark all season in smallbore," said
UA head coach
Newt Engle. "Now it we can
get smallbore and air rifle to both be hot at the same match we
will be right where we need to be."
Despite posting their lowest scores in more than a month, the Zips
claimed the top seven individual slots in the air rifle
competition. Sophomore
Melissa Lussier (Clinton,
Conn./Middletown) took top gun honors with a score of 576 and
freshman
Marybeth Brewer (Royal Oak,
Mich./Berkley) fired a personal-best mark of 574.
The rifle team will take some time off for the holidays before
gearing up for the second half of the season. The Zips will
kick-off the final leg of the 2006-07 campaign on January 13 at
Penn State, followed by the Palmyra Invitational in Penn. on the
following day where it will meet reigning Mid-Atlantic Conference
champion the United States Navel Academy.
"There is no doubt about it; the match against Navy will be one of
the toughest matches of the year," Engle said.
Team results:
1. University of Akron (Gold), 4,536
2. University of Akron (Blue), 4,477
3. Rose Hulman Institute of Technology, 4,305
