Women's Soccer Athletes Earn MAC Academic Award
November 20 | Women's Soccer
AKRON, Ohio - University of Akron junior
Krystin Wilson (Hudson,
Ohio/Hudson HS) and sophomore
Christine Vacha (Fairview
Park, Ohio/Magnificat HS) were two of 25 student-athletes named to
the Women's Soccer Academic All-Mid-American Conference Team, the
league office announced Monday. Voting for the award was conducted
by faculty athletics representatives at each of the league's 12
institutions.
Wilson, who maintains a 3.83 grade-point average as a business
major, was named to the team for the second-consecutive year. She
played and started in 17 matches at the goalkeeper position,
posting a 10-7-0 record and six shutouts in those contests, while
aiding Akron in reaching its highest win total (11) and most
shutouts (nine) in the six-year history of the program. A
contributed factor to UA's 7-0 start, which included shutouts in
the first six contests, Wilson recorded a 1.07 goals-against
average - the program's single-season record - and made 61 saves
and allowed just 18 goals in 1,510 minutes played.
Vacha, who owns a 3.36 GPA as a political science and criminal
justice student, played in all 18 matches (16 starts) as a forward.
She led UA in scoring with 14 points (six goals, two assists), with
that point total ranking as the fourth most in a season in team
history and the six goals tying for fourth-best all-time on the
school's list. Vacha also led the squad in shots on goal (13) and
ranked second in overall shots (21). Three of her six goals were
game winners (team high), a number that tied the school record for
most in a season.
The number of honorees on the Academic All-MAC Team is either a
predetermined amount for the specific sport or 33 percent of the
number of nominees, whichever is greater.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has
excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete
must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in
at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport.
First-year students and junior college transfers in their first
year of residence are not eligible for the award.
