Gold Tops Blue in First Game of World Series
October 09 | Baseball
AKRON, Ohio - Redshirt freshman Steven
Zemanek II (Euclid, Ohio/Villa Angela-St. Joseph) allowed
just one run in six strong innings to lead the Gold Team to a 2-1
victory over the Blue Team in the first game of the Blue and Gold
Fall World Series Monday afternoon at Lee Jackson Field.
The annual intrasquad exhibition features a best-of-five format
with each game lasting seven innings. The winners of the series
will be treated to steak dinners while the losers will eat hot
dogs.
Zemanek (1-0) scattered four hits and fanned three to out-duel
Blue starter
Frank Turocy (0-1), who
allowed both runs on four hits in 5.1 innings in the defeat.
Sophomore
Ryne Romick (Hannibal,
Ohio/Hannibal) shut the door in the seventh to pick up the
save.
Three straight hits with two outs in the home half of the second
inning gave Zemanek all the offense he would need. Sophomore Matt
Roberts (Bucyrus, Ohio/Bucyrus) got things going for the Gold
with a two-out single and came around to score on a double off the
bat of freshman catcher John Turk (Kirtland,
Ohio/Kirtland). Romick followed with a two-bagger down the
right-field line to plate the final run of the inning.
Zemanek's bid for a shutout was spoiled in the sixth when freshman
Jake Plata (Parma, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) singled
through the left side of the infield to score sophomore Nick
Solitario (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth), who reached with a
one-out double.
The first two Blue Team batters reached in the seventh and final
inning off of freshman reliever Bobby Simone
(Silver Lake, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) when senior Charlie Lenhard
(Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) recorded a base hit to left and
junior Vince Chiera (Akron,
Ohio/Walsh) followed with a bunt single. But the Gold Team called
on Romick, who moved from shortstop to the pitcher's mound, to
defuse the rally.
Romick struck out freshman
Jeremy Goldizen (Perry,
Ohio/Perry) before loading the bases with one out with a walk to
junior
Rashard Graves
(Indianapolis, Ind./Lincoln Trail JC), but induced a pair of ground
balls preserve the win for the Gold.
The two squads will square off again Tuesday starting at 3 p.m. at
Lee Jackson Field. Family, friends and fans are encouraged to
attend the free event.
