Rifle Set to Open 2006 Season
October 12 | Rifle
The University of Akron rifle team will kick-off its 2006-07
schedule at the Boilermaker Invitational at Purdue University in
West Lafayette, Ind., this Saturday.
The Zips are coming off of a stellar year, winning both the
Mid-Atlantic Conference (MAC) Rifle Championship along with their
second consecutive Western Intercollegiate Rifle Conference (WIRC)
Championship.
Headlining the returnees to this year's squad are sophomores
Melissa Lussier (Clinton,
Conn./Middletown),
Julie DeBrita (Scotia,
N.Y./Scotia Glenville) and
Michael Tokarz (Lewisburg,
W.V./Greenbrier East), and defending individual WIRC smallbore
champion junior
Megan Reinking (Fort Wayne,
Ind./Concordia Lutheran).
Lussier was selected to the WIRC first team in both the smallbore
and air rifle, while DeBrita and Reinking were named first-team
smallbore team and second-team air rifle. Tokarz was a member of
the first-team air rifle squad. DeBrita and Lussier were also named
to the All-MAC team following outstanding freshmen campaigns.
Last year, Akron won the Boilermaker Invitational for the second
consecutive season. They were led by Tokarz, who shot a personal
best in the smallbore with 566 out of a possible 600; a score
matched by Reinking. Lussier took top honors in the air rifle
competition with a 570 out of 600.
Akron will open its home schedule in two weeks, on October 28,
when it hosts the United States Coast Guard Academy.
