AKRON, Ohio (AP) - Dru Joyce scored 16 points and hit a basket to start a pivotal 12-4 second-half run to lead Akron past Eastern Michigan 79-61 on Saturday night.
With the Zips (13-3, 6-0 Mid-American Conference) holding on to a 45-42 lead, Joyce hit a layup at the 14:36 mark. Romeo Travis, who finished with 15 points, made a free throw and a jumper, Cedrick Middleton added two foul shots, Matt Futch made a basket and Rob Preston capped the spurt with a 3-pointer.
Akron never led by fewer than nine points again.
John Bowler's 16 points led Eastern Michigan (3-11, 0-6), with Carlos Medlock adding 13 and Danny McElhinny 12.
Preston and Nate Linhart each scored 13 points for the Zips, who forced 24 turnovers while shooting 49 percent from the field.
Akron travels to Ohio Tuesday. Tip off is set for 7 p.m. EST,
and the game will be televised statewide on The Ohio News Network
(ONN).
