Women's Soccer Defeats Buffalo In Double Overtime
October 21 | Women's Soccer
BUFFALO, N.Y. - The University of Akron women's soccer team defeated University at Buffalo 1-0 in double overtime Friday in a Mid-American Conference match at UB Stadium.
Akron (4-10-2, 2-6-1 MAC) scored its golden goal with 5:05 remaining in the second overtime period when freshman Christine Vacha (Fairview Park, Ohio/Magnificat) found the net from 20 yards out. The goal was the first of her collegiate career.
The Zips, who led in the shots-on-goal category 5-4, threatened a minute prior to the gamewinner as well when a Vacha header off a corner kick went high.
Buffalo (4-11-1, 2-7-0 MAC) led the game with nine shots compared to eight by Akron, and had an opportunity to win with under two minutes to go in the first overtime period. The effort was thwarted by a save by UA goalkeeper Krystin Wilson (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) who spent the entire night in goal, tallying five saves. She improved her record to 4-7-2 and picked up her fourth shutout of the season.
Akron, which has won or tied in three-straight contests, competes against Kent State Sunday. Gametime is set for 1 p.m. EDT at KSU Soccer Field. With two games remaining, the Zips are still in contention for a spot in the league tournament in which only the top eight teams qualify.
