AKRON (April 27) -- After falling behind 1-0, Buffalo scored 15 unanswered runs and defeated Akron, 15-1, Friday afternoon in Game #1 of a four-game Mid-American Conference baseball weekend series at Lee Jackson Field.
UB improved to 10-31 overall, 5-16 in the MAC. The Zips slipped to 8-28, 3-13.
Righthander Brendan Dunford went the distance for UB, scattering eight hits and fanning nine. He kept Akron hitters off balance the entire game with a good mix of pitches. Dunford upped his record to 3-4. The Zips, meanwhile, received an admirable start from senior southpaw Steve Bowers, who worked into the seventh inning, but was done in by eight walks.
Senior shortstop Clarke White singled home Bowers in the bottom of the first and the Zips led 1-0. Buffalo got on the board in the fourth when White threw high to first baseman Jim Gemler and the Bulls plated two runs. UB broke it open with four runs in the sixth fueled by three hits- doubles from Joe Todoro, Kevin Nesteruk, Tim Sova. UB scored three in the seventh without the benefit of a safe hit.
The two teams play a twinbill tomorrow beginning at 1 o'clock at Jackson Field.
