Kent State Bombs Zips, 13-1

AKRON (April 22) - Kent State belted five home runs Sunday afternoon and routed the Zips, 13-1, in a Mid-American Conference baseball game Sunday afternoon at Lee Jackson Field. The Golden Flashes took three of four games during the weekend series.
Kent improved to 14-21 overall, 9-6 in the MAC. The Zips fell to 7-26, 3-12 MAC.
With the score 4-1 after seven innings, KSU center fielder Dave Mattle and designated hitter Dan Gutschmidt unloaded home runs against Zip relief pitcher Ben Shepherd. Akron southpaw Bryan Celik was tagged for three long balls in the ninth.
The Zips actually contained Kent through seven frames as sophomore hurler Justin Lucas pitched effectively. KSU stranded 12 base runners against Lucas, who took the loss and slipped to 1-6.
Shortstop Clarke White crushed a solo home run in the bottom of the second to provide Akron's lone run and tie the score at 1. The Zips had chances in the fourth and sixth innings to cut into Kent's lead, but failed to get the clutch two-out hit. White and redshirt freshman third baseman Craig Welch were two-time hitters for the Zips. Kent outhit Akron, 21-6. Scott Diehl (1-2) earned the win for Kent.
The Zips play at Ohio State Wednesday at 6:35 p.m.
