Penguins Rally Past Zips, 10-6

AKRON (April 10) — Youngstown State sent 12 men to the plate and scored seven runs in the top of the eighth to rally past Akron, 10-6, in a college baseball game played Tuesday evening at Canal Park.
The Penguins improved to 13-13-1. The Zips fell to 5-18. The two teams play again April 26 at Youngstown State.
Akron led 6-3 moving into the top of the eighth inning. With one out, third baseman Adam Cox singled and shortstop James Swearengen doubled to knock out Zips’ starter Justin Lucas. Reliever Ben Shepherd then yielded back-to-back singles before right fielder Joe Marzano delivered a two-run home run down the left field line to give YSU an 8-6 advantage.
But the Penguins were not finished. A walk, a double and an error enabled the visitors to plate two huge insurance runs and make it 10-6.
The Zips missed on several chances to have a bigger lead for the later stages of the game. A failed suicide squeeze, a caught stealing at third to end the fourth frame, a line out double play with the bases loaded in the sixth all contributed to keep Youngstown State in the game. The Zips fanned 11 times and could not fully capitalize on six YSU errors and eight walks.
Shepherd was tagged with the loss and slipped to 1-1. Jonathan Smart (4-2) pitched 4 1/3 innings of effective relief for YSU and earned the win.
Akron freshman second baseman Brady Steineck went 4-for-5 at the plate with a double, but crossed home plate once.
The Zips entertain Duquesne Wednesday at 3 o’clock at Lee Jackson Field.
