Central Nips Akron, 8-7, In Nine Innings

MT. PLEASANT, MICH. (March 31) -- Mike Galloway singled in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth with two outs to lift Central Michigan to an 8-7 Mid-American Conference baseball win over Akron Saturday afternoon.
CMU improved to 13-10 overall, 4-2 in the MAC. The Zips slipped to 4-12, 1-3.
Akron went on top 5-3 in the top of the third when third baseman Terry Mahl unloaded a three-run home run to highlight a four-run frame.
Central took the lead, 7-6, with a three spot in the bottom of the fifth, but Akron answered when center fielder Steve Bowers walked, catcher Sean Manfredonia singled, and Bowers scored on an error by right fielder Ryan Krueger.
UA coach Tim Berenyi got an admirable pitching performance from his two rookies, Tony Samad, who started, and Ryan Rankin, who pitched well in relief, but lost.
Shortstop Clarke White continues to swing a hot bat for the Zips, going 2-for-5 with one run scored. The Zips scored seven runs on six hits and capitalized on five CMU errors.
DH Tim Groves and left fielder Bryan Scheurer belted home runs for Central Michigan. Relief ace Gavin Gillette picked up the pitching win.
Game #2 of the doubleheader was suspended heading into the bottom of the sixth with Central leading 9-0. That game will be completed before Sunday's finale.
