Women's Soccer Adds Three Players

AKRON - University of Akron women's soccer coach Catherine Byrne today announced the addition of three newcomers to her Zips team, which will make its debut this fall. Transfer Catherine Schillig and incoming freshmen Samantha Lytle and Crystal Tabor will join the fledgling program as it prepares for its first season of Division I intercollegiate competition.
Schillig (Columbus, Ohio / Gahanna Lincoln) is a transfer from the University of North Alabama who will have two years of eligibility with the Zips. The striker was named to the All-Gulf South Conference and All-South Regional first teams following a freshman season in which she set established school records for single-season goals (14), assists (7), points (35) and shots (93), and single-game assists (4). Last season she tallied 23 points on 10 goals and three assists. A four-year letterwinner at Gahanna Lincoln, she also participated in the Ohio ODP during her prep career.
Tabor (La Mesa, Calif. / Grossmont) is a signee who will compete for time as a keeper. A three-year letterwinner, she was named to the Union-Tribune All-Academic Team in her final two prep seasons and was on the ODP District 1 team. In 1997, Tabor was awarded the "Best Goalkeeper" Award at the Ian Rush Soccer Tournament in Great Britain.
Lytle (Wooster, Ohio / Wooster) is a midfielder who will be an invited walk-on when fall practice commences. A four-year letterwinner and two-year captain for Wooster, she was a Greater Akron All-District Team selection as a junior and senior.
The Zips play their debut game on Fri., August 31, 2001, against
Youngstown State as part of the UA Zippy Tournament. The program's
debut season is set to kick-off at 7 p.m. Canisius and Howard play
in the first game at 5 p.m. that day. The consolation and
championship games will be played the next day.
