South Alabama Completes Three-Game Sweep

MOBILE, Ala. - South Alabama completed a weekend sweep of the Akron Zips this afternoon at Stanky Field, winning the final game of the series 14-3. The loss was the third straight for the Zips, who fall to 3-6 on the young season.

Freshman hurler Aaron Gangi (0-2) suffered his second loss this year, giving up four earned runs in 2.1 innings.

Jim Gemler went 2-3 with an RBI, while centerfielder Steve Bowers kept up his torrid early season with a two-run homer in the top of the fifth. He also stole his tenth base in as many tries. Bowers is now hitting .333, while Gemler is batting a team-best .364.

Akron is back in action on Sunday, March 18, when the Zips take on Maine at Jackie Robinson Park in Daytona, Fla. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. The game is the first of a five-game swing through Florida that includes a pair of contests against perennial national power Florida State.
