Baseball Splits a Pair in Season-Opening Tournament

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - First-year head coach Tim Berenyi tallied the first win of his career Saturday, as his Akron Zips used a five-run fifth ining to seal a 15-6 win over Xavier here at the season-opening East Tennessee State Tournament. Jim Gemler, Mike Langguth and Ryan Lucas all homered for the Zips, helping junior Ben Shepherd pick up the win for Akron (1-1).
Shephered relieved Justin Lucas in the fifth inning and allowed only one hit and two walks while striking out four over the remaining 4.2 innings.
Centerfielder Steve Bowers went 3-4 with two RBI, while freshman shortstop Brady Steineck went 2-6 with a triple and two RBI.
The win followed a season-opening 10-5 loss to Xavier Friday. Steineck homered for the Zips in the loss, which was suffered by freshman hurler Ryan Rankin.
The Zips' scheduled game Sunday against East Tennessee State was
canceled due to bad weather. Akron next plays this Friday, March 2,
at Campbell's Fighting Camel Classic. Akron faces Stonybrook at 3
p.m. (ET) and host Campbell at 6 p.m.
