Mike Krino was a 1938 graduate of The University of Akron and a three-year letterman as a center in football. He earned All-Ohio mention in 1935-36 while playing for coaches, Howard “Red” Blair and Jimmy Aiken.
Later he was an assistant football coach under Aiken, Tommy Dowler and Otis Douglas and a long-time head football coach and athletic director at Akron East High School.
In 1970 he was asked by Athletic Director Gordon Larson to head the reactivation of the A-Men’s Association. Krino did just that and is considered the “founding father” of the organization.
In 1978, four years after women athletics began on campus, the name was changed to the Varsity A Association. He served as president for the Varsity A’s first three years, during which he suggested that the group should start a sports hall of fame for the University. That was accomplished in 1975 with Gerald Reeves as president.
Krino was inducted into the Summit County Sports Hall of Fame in 1973. He passed away in 2004 at the age 90.
