Literally thousands of Akron-area athletes were administered to during the years 1926 to 1953 by Harry A. Smith, better known as “Doc”. He was a teacher, coach, trainer, philosopher, and poet. A builder of men. Born August 31, 1888 in North Platter, Nebraska, Smith, the son of a railroad engineer, attended the American College of Physical Education and then entered the University of Chicago for the purpose of becoming a physician but, an attack of typhoid fever ended the effort. He later continued his study at The University of Akron, earning his bachelor’s and masters of education in 1928 and 1929, respectively. “Doc” first came to the University in 1926 to help coach under Howard “Red” Blair and then joined the faculty in 1928. He first served as trainer under Jimmy Aiken in the late 30’s coached track and after a respite due to World War II, was bought back into the training room by Athletic Director Kenneth “Red” Cochrane in 1948. “Doc” played no favorites in the training room, treating friend or foe and either college or high school athletes. In 1951, Kent State halfback Dick Pitts was among the lame who showed up at “Doc’s” door. In the Akron-Kent State football game a couple weeks later, Smith’s magic was put to the test and Pitts responded by gaining 190 yards rushing and scored on a 74-yard dash while thumping the Zips, 48-7. That same year, “Doc” treated over 250 high school athletes. That kind of activity isn’t permitted any longer by edict of the NCAA. A part-time philosopher, the popular trainer had a collection of affirmations. A couple of favorites were: “A quitter never wins, and a winner never quits. If you stand for nothing you will fall for anything and: Be ready. For whatever may come whenever it comes.” “Doc” retired from UA in June 1953 because of ill health. Subsequently, Smith passed away on October 3, 1953. His life had been an inspiration to many because of his exemplary character, inspiration, leadership, and his devotion to duty. “Doc’s” memory lives on with the annual presentation of the Harry “Doc” Smith Awards, given outstanding Zip football player in each class. “Doc’s” surviving children are here tonight to accept this posthumous, Mrs. Adele V. Nelson of Evergreen, Colorado, Mr. Jerome V. Smith of Medina and Mrs. Marcella A. Plazak of Beaver, PA.
