When you talk of soccer cornerstones at The University of Akron, the conversation usually gets around to George Nanchoff quickly. A four-year letterman (1973-76), Nanchoff etched his name in every single season and career statistical category. His offensive prowess enabled him to finish his career with 56 goals and 32 assists—second only to UA’s all-time collegiate scoring leader, Hall of Famer Pete Milich. A native of Resen, Yugoslavia, Nanchoff was UA’s leading scorer in 1973, ’74 and ’75. It took Georige’s younger brother, Louie, to prevent a clean sweep in 1976. During his junior and senior campaigns, he led UA to the NCAA I playoffs as the Zip booters captured the Ohio Collegiate Soccer Association’s titles and he earned first-team All-American honors both seasons. In addition, Nanchoff was voted Ohio’s top offensive player (Carl Dale Award), UA’s Most Valuable Player and the school’s Athlete of the Year for his performance during the 1976 season. His outstanding skills and play earned Nanchoff a second-round draft pick by the Fort Lauderdale Strikers of the North American Soccer League (NASL). George promptly rewarded the franchise with a performance that garnered him Soccer America’s Rookie of the Year Award. George went on to showcase his talents with the Atlanta Chiefs (1978-80) and the Phoenix Inferno (1980-82). George would return to Northeast Ohio to finish out playing his career with the Cleveland Force (1982-85). Though retired from professional play, soccer is still Nanchoff’s favorite business. As the owner and manager of the Force Soccer Shoppes, he enjoyed providing game tickets, soccer paraphernalia and Force memorabilia to fans, players, and coaches. Nanchoff currently resides in Seven Hills with his wife, Marian and their three children, George, Nicole and Michael.
