In 1912 Fultom Samuel Duval Mahan was born in Louisville, KY. Three years later, the University of Akron joined the Ohio Conference (OC), Mahan, better known as “Lefty”, moved to Akron in 1920 as the UA cagers were capturing their second OC Championship. He now joins teammates Dave Appleby (1976). Russ Estey (1978) and Vern Sir Louis (1989). One of the most outstanding athletes to ever wear the blue and gold, Mahan earnd 10 letters at Akron between 1932 and 1934—three each in basketball, football and track and one in baseball. However, it was basketball that Mahan preferred. As a sophomore he was so impressive that he earned first team All-Ohio Conference honors. He helped guide UA to a 11-3 record in 1933 and to an excellent 15-1 campaign in winning the OC Championship in 1934. After that senior season, “Lefty” was awarded the Athletic Honor Cup, emblematic of Athlete of the Year and was named to Phi Delta Theta’s All-American quintet. In 1935 Mahan received another fine tribute when he was named to UA’s all-time basketball team along with Tommy Tomkinson, Russ Estey, Eddie Wentz and Verlin Jenkins—all Hall of Famers, “Lefty” stood out in leadership, aggressiveness, and consistency, “praised his coach, Howard “Red” Blair in 1935.
