The running game was the primary offense under Head Coach Jim Dennison’s coaching reign (1973-85) and Dennis Brumfield fir the mold of the power running tailback that was featured in the Dennison attack. Coming out of Elizabeth, PA, Brumfield became the first UA football player to gain 1,000 yards or more for two seasons. His first two seasons (1978 and ’79) Brumfield played in the shadow of the Hall of Famer Paul Winters. However, in that ’79 season, number two on the team scoring. He also ran for 66 yards on 11 carries and scored his first collegiate TD’s from one and 35 yards out against Bolse State. Brumfield came into his own as a junior by topping all rushers in the Ohio Valley Conference—by running for 1,000 yards in 10 games. Included in those figures was Brumfield’s 186 yards on 44 carries as UA upset the OVC champion, Eastern Kentucky, 21-10. In his senior campaign, the 6-0, 195-pound Brumfield surpassed his previous marks by rushing for 1,041 yards, including 208 on 40 carries against Morehead State. His 2,341 yards rushing ranked him third on UA’s all-time career list and his 100 points he scored put him in eighth place on the all-time list. His efforts earned him the Outstanding Offensive Performance Awards In both 1980 and ’81 and he was voted the Outstanding Back as a senior. Brumfield married UA graduate Kathy Thomas in April, 1981 and they now have four children, Dennis, Joshua, Katrina and Matthew. A new addition to the Brumfield is expected In August. For the past seven years, Brumfield has been employed as an officer at Gratorford (PA) Correctional Institution, home for 4,000 convicts. The Brumfield’s reside in Spring City, PA.
