This Akron native displayed his athletic talents in not one sport, but three. A three-year letterman in basketball, baseball and track (1926-28), Brodt earned nine letters while at Akron. His first year at UA he was honored as being the captain of the freshman football team. However, it was in basketball that Brodt excelled. In his first season as a cager, he led the Ohio Conference in free throw shooting while averaging 10 points a game to lead the “Zippers” in scoring. An All-Ohio selection in 1927-28 and ’28-29 and team captain on the ’27-28 team, the school newspaper recognized Carl’s talents by stating, “one of the best forwards in Ohio and undoubtedly its premier foul shooter.” On the baseball diamond, Brodt known for his fiery competitiveness on the mound, won his first baseball game ever as a pitcher in his first game at Akron. That win came 1926 against Hiram. In track, Brodt threw the discus and shot put. Brodt’s involvement with UA was not limited to the playing fields; he was president of the Men’s Intramural Board of Control, the Chemistry Club, a member of the Delta Epsilon Chi (Chemistry honorary) and the Lone Star Fraternity, as well as an “A” Key winner. After graduating with a chemical engineering degree, Brodt spent most of his working life with Firestone. He passed away in 1985.
