Andy Maluke began his career at The University of Akron in 1938 as an undergraduate.
During his days as an athlete at Akron in the late 1930s and early 1940s, he was a great star in football, wrestling, and swimming. In both 1940 and 1941 he was named first-team All-Ohio Conference in wrestling, and in 1941 he was named first-team All-Ohio in football. He played guard under Tim Dowler (1939-40) and Otis Douglas in 1941. Maluke served as a co-captain in 1941.
After a stint in the service during World War II, Maluke returned to the Hilltop in 1946 as instructor in physical education and an assistant football coach.
A year after he returned to his alma mater to begin his coaching career, Maluke reinstated wrestling as an intercollegiate sport, after an absence of four years. His UA grapplers captured two Ohio Conference championships, one co-championship and had five second place finishes.
In addition, Maluke coached tennis two years and ended his coaching career in 1969 after three years of guiding the Zip swimmers.
His coaching career at Akron spanned 19 years in football in which he served under five coaches; 19 years as head wrestling coach in which his teams won 100 matches. It was largely due to Maluke's efforts that wrestling became an Ohio Conference varsity sport in 1954.
Maluke was inducted into the Summit Country Sports Hall of Fame in 1975.
