Brianna Sanders enters her fourth season as assistant coach on the Akron women's basketball staff during the 2020-21 campaign after being named as an assistant coach on June 1, 2017.
Sanders coaches the Zips' 3's and point guards and serves as the team's co-offensive coordinator, while overseeing equipment and scheduling components for Akron. Additionally, she assists with recruiting efforts, specifically junior college recruits.
Since Sanders arrived at Akron, five student-athletes in Alyssa Clay (2017-18, 2018-19, 2019-20), Shayna Harmon (2017-18, 2018-19, 2019-20), Kendall Miller (2019-20), Megan Sefcik (2017-18, 2018-19) and Caitlin Vari (2017-18, 2018-19, 2019-20) have earned Academic All-MAC honors, while Sefcik achieved MAC Distinguished Scholar recognition following the 2018-19 season.
The Zips have posted cumulative team GPA's of 3.0 or better in each of the first four semesters under head coach Melissa Jackson entering this season, including registering cumulative marks of 3.141 and 3.233 during the 2018-19 and 2019-20 campaigns, respectively. The number improved to 3.338 following Akron earning a 3.372 team GPA for the Fall 2020 Semester.
Sanders came to Akron after serving as director of operations for the women's basketball program at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga for three seasons under head coach Jim Foster, a 2013 Women's Basketball Hall of Fame enshrine.
The Lady Mocs captured the Southern Conference Tournament title during the 2016-17 season and earned the program's fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament berth. The Lady Mocs posted a 21-11 ledger during the 2016-17 campaign and were 74-23 overall during Sander's three seasons with Chattanooga.
Prior to her time in Tennessee, Sanders was an assistant coach for the Reynoldsburg High School girls' varsity basketball team in Columbus, Ohio. The team finished with a 23-5 record and won the Ohio Capital Conference (OCC) title and went on to claim the district title and advance to the regional final.
A 2014 graduate of The Ohio State University with a degree in African and African-American Studies, Sanders played for the Buckeyes and Foster from 2009-11. An ACL tear for a third time ended her playing career after her sophomore year. She went on to become a student coach for the remainder of her time as a Buckeye.
Ohio State earned the Big Ten Conference regular season title once in her time in Columbus and twice won the Big Ten Tournament title.
A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Sanders graduated from Princeton High School in 2009.
