Attila Schmidt is in his sixth overall season on the Zips' staff in 2026 and first as an assistant coach on the University of Akron men's soccer staff after serving as a volunteer assistant coach the previous five campaigns.

During Schmidt's time at Akron, the Zips have compiled four at-large bids to the NCAA Tournament while producing six Major League Soccer SuperDraft selections. After securing the program's first-ever BIG EAST Conference regular season championship in 2024, Schmidt was the recipient of BIG EAST Conference Coaching Staff of the Year honors. The 2025 Zips advanced to the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals following a 2-0 triumph over No. 15 Duke in the NCAA Tournament Third Round and a 1-0 victory over Notre Dame in the NCAA Tournament Second Round.

Prior to joining the Zips, Schmidt served as head men's soccer coach at Benedictine University (Ill.) where he helped guide the Eagles to five consecutive winning seasons and the program's first two NCAA Tournament victories.

Before Benedictine, Schmidt served two seasons as assistant men's soccer coach and head recruiting coordinator at Amherst College. During his tenure, Amherst posted an overall record of 32-2-8 (.857) securing back-to-back NCAA Tournament Round of 16 appearances and the programs first NCAA Tournament National Championship in 2015.

Prior to Amherst, Schmidt served four seasons (2010-13) as assistant men's soccer coach and head recruiting coordinator at Lake Forest College. The Foresters compiled a 54-20-4 (.718) overall record and won back-to-back conference titles in 2012 and 2013 while earning the programs first NCAA Tournament selection since the 1980 season.

As a student-athlete, Schmidt was a midfielder for the varsity squad at Lake Forest College (2004-07) where he was the recipient of All-Midwest Conference honors for three consecutive seasons and voted team captain his final two seasons. Schmidt started every game his final three seasons and finished his collegiate playing career with 20 goals and 18 assists.

A native of Akron, Schmidt earned a B.A. in economics from Lake Forest College in 2008 and a master’s in recreation and sport sciences from Ohio University in 2017. He holds a National 'B' License from the United States Soccer Federation and a Premier Diploma from the United Soccer Coaches.
