Stuart Dobson returns to the Zips staff for his third year afterspending the previous four seasons on the coaching staff at UCSanta Barbara. Dobson was named Akron’s goalkeepers coach onAug 15, 2012.
Under Dobson’s guidance, Zips’ goalkeeper David Mevesbecame the NCAA’s all-time leader in shutous (54) andfinished his phenomenal four-year career with a careergoals-against-average of 0.50, which tied for fifth-best in NCAAhistory in 2012. The NSCAA Second Team All-American recorded cleansheets in eight straight matches that fall and finished with atotal of 16 in 22 contests. In all, Meves and the Zips heldopponents to just eight goals for the season and didn’t allowmore than one goal in any single contest.
Meves was selected by the Portland Timbers of Major League Soccerwith the third overall pick of the supplemental draft in January of2013.
Dobson also served in the same capacity with the Gauchos where hementored three straight net minders to the professional ranks inDan Kennedy (Chivas USA), Kyle Reynish (Real Salt Lake) and SamHayden (Ventura Fusion USL).
Well respected among his peers, Dobson, who enjoyed a 15-yearprofessional playing career as a goalkeeper in both the U.S. andoverseas, was brought into the U.S. Women’s Under-23 NationalTeam training camp in 2011 to evaluate and develop goalkeepers forselection to the U-23 team and eventually the full side.
Dobson, who also coached goalkeepers for the women’s teamduring his time at UCSB, is currently the ‘keepers coach onthe Super Y-League National Team and spent the 2007-08 seasoncoaching the New Jersey Ironmen of the Major Indoor Soccer Leaguewhere he worked with former U.S. National Team captain and MajorLeague Soccer MVP Tony Meola.
A native of Beverley, England, Dobson has worked with some of themost accomplished and recognizable names in the history of soccerin this country. He moved to the U.S. at the age of 21 to attendthe University of Portland, where he succeeded eventual U.S.National Team goalkeeper Kasey Keller. While earning his degree inbusiness management, he spent four seasons playing under formerU.S. National Team assistant coach Clive Charles.
