A 30-plus year veteran on the collegiate coaching scene, DanPeters is in his fifth season as a member of the Akron staff.Assuming the role of director of basketball operations, he overseesall logistics related to the program, including scheduling,coordination of team travel and tape exchange.
Peters came to UA after spending five seasons at Ohio State,serving as associate director of operations his first two yearsthere. In three seasons as an assistant coach at OSU (2005-07), hehelped the Buckeyes to 81 victories, two NCAA tournamentappearances, a school-record 35 wins in 2006-07, a pair of outrightBig Ten regular-season titles, a league tournament title and anappearance in the 2007 NCAA National Championship game.
Peters, who spent five years on the staff at the University ofCincinnati with current West Virginia and former Akron head coachBob Huggins, is familiar with the state of Ohio and has experienceas a Division I head coach. Peters joined the Cincinnati staff inMay of 1999 as an assistant coach and was promoted to associatehead coach in 2002.
Prior to his stint at Cincinnati, Peters spent six seasons ashead coach at Youngstown State. He also served as the head coach atnearby Walsh College and St. Joseph's College of Indiana, amassinga combined record of 237-140 in 14 years at those threeschools.
Peters began his coaching career at Guernsey Catholic HighSchool in Cambridge, Ohio. He spent two years there and one seasonat Meadowbrook High School in Byesville, Ohio, before jumping tothe collegiate ranks as a graduate assistant at Delta State for the1979-80 season.
In 1981, Peters moved to Walsh College as an assistant toHuggins. He succeeded Huggins in 1984 (when Huggins was hired ashead coach at Akron) and directed Walsh to a 28-4 record in hisfirst year. He spent five seasons at Walsh, compiling an overallrecord of 116-39 and earning district coach of the year honors ontwo occasions.
At the conclusion of the 1988 campaign, Peters accepted an offerto become an assistant coach at Western Carolina. The followingyear, he returned to Ohio and spent two seasons (1990 and 1991) asan assistant coach at Akron under then Zips' head coach ColemanCrawford.
Following the 1991 season, Peters was named head coach at St.Joseph's, where he compiled a two-year mark of 43-14 and led histeam to an NCAA Division II tournament appearance in his firstseason.
In 1993, Peters moved to Youngstown State to take over theprogram as the head coach. He directed the 1998 edition of thePenguins to a 20-8 record, a berth in the championship game of theMid-Continent Conference tournament and was named the league'scoach of the year.
Peters was born in Cleveland and grew up in nearby Canton, Ohio.He is a 1976 graduate of Kent State, earning a bachelor's degree insocial studies. Peters and his wife, Nancy, reside in Akron andhave sons, Danny and Michael. Danny is a former student-athlete forthe Ohio State basketball team and is a graduate assistant with theUniversity of Arizona basketball program.
